Rio Rico to Sierra Vista

After a late night, day four of our tour was a very pleasant, leisurely drive to Sierra Vista, visiting all the key sites along the way.

Rio Rico Ponds:

There was a little water in the ponds, which gave a bit of suitable habitat for quite a large flock of BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS, plus ‘MEXICAN’ MALLARD, and a WHITE-FACED IBIS. Also in the area, BLACK VULTUE, SWAINSON’S HAWK, a few TROPICAL KINGBIRDS, ‘MEXICAN’ CLIFF SWALLOW, RUFOUS-WINGED SPARROW, BRONZED COWBIRD, and BULLOCK’S ORIOLE.

Kino Springs:

It was quiet here again, with just COMMON GROUND-DOVE and a migrant OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER being of note.

Patagonia:

A few WILD TURKEYS were by the roadside just west of town.

Tucson Audubon’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds:

Several VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRDS came in to the feeders at regular intervals.

Also there, GRAY HAWK, INCA DOVE, BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, ABERT’S TOWHEE, SUMMER TANAGER, and BLACK-HEADED and BLUE GROSBEAKS. Thanks for all your hard work with the feeders, Larry!

It was fun to watch mama GAMBEL’S QUAIL with her babies.

Las Cienegas:

Four more BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were at Cottonwood Pond, along with COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and more BULLOCK’S ORIOLES.

At the northernmost reintroduction site, the BLACK-TAILED PRAIRIE-DOGS also had babies. CUTE!

Driving through Las Cienegas, we also discovered SCALED QUAIL, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, CHIHUAHUAN RAVEN, HORNED LARK, and ‘LILIAN’S’ EASTERN MEADOWLARK. We also found another SONORAN GOPHERSNAKE, but thankfully, this one didn’t try to attack me!
