SW Wings Festival: Carr Canyon

My third and final tour for the Southwest Wings Birding Festival in Sierra Vista this year. This one was Carr Canyon, and we had a good day, although we did miss out on a few of our target species. I also managed to go out with a flat camera battery and no spare, so no bird photos today.

Carr Canyon Rd:

A couple of stops along the road produced SWAINSON’S, ZONE-TAILED and GRAY HAWKS, GREATER ROADRUNNER, PYRRRHULOXIA, and BOTTERI’S and LARK SPARROWS.

Carr House:

We were invited to visit Carr House, a historic cabin set in beautiful habitat, open as an educational facility.

The hummingbird feeders were lively, and we watched MAGNIFICENT, BLACK-CHINNED, ANNA’S, RUFOUS, and BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRDS coming in.

Also in the area, WHITE-THROATED SWIFT, ARIZONA WOODPECKER, DUSKY-CAPPED and SULPHUR-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, PLUMBEOUS and HUTTON’S VIREOS, BUSHTIT, BLACK-HEADED and BLUE GROSBEAKS, and RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW.

Reef Townsite Campground:

Our main stop, and as usual it was lively, although not as birdy as it has been in recent visits, with a few birds eluding us. We did manage to dig out BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD, ARIZONA WOODPECKER, GREATER PEWEE, CORDILLERAN and BUFF-BREASTED FLYCATCHERS, PLUMBEOUS and HUTTON’S VIREOS, STELLER’S JAY, BROWN CREEPER, WESTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN ROBIN, HEPATIC TANAGER, GRACE’S and BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS, PAINTED REDSTART, RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW, and YELLOW-EYED JUNCO.

Ramsey Vista Campground:

We stopped for lunch but didn’t see anything particularly interesting.

Old Sawmill Spring:

I’d never hiked this trail, but we decided to go for it. It’s only about a half mile to the spring, which has superb habitat and is known as a good spot for Virginia’s Warbler. We didn’t find any, but it was a good place to visit and has great potential.
